Thanks for visiting the Pigskin Geography Website. I have been an educator with 36 years of Newspaper in Education experience. I have served as an elementary school principal for 20 years, and 11 of those years included the use of the newspaper as an instructional tool on a daily basis by the total faculty and every student from kindergarten to sixth grade. I have been a sixth grade teacher for 14 years with the newspaper serving as the basic text, with the textbooks used only to supplement my newspaper instruction. As a teacher, I believe I was the first person in the United States to reverse the role of the newspaper and the textbook while developing NIE techniques. The results of a comparative study I did on teaching solely from the newspaper were published at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in GRASSROOTS EDITOR. The results showed NIE to be a very positive influence in education. I have written books for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the Chicago Sun Times, and have done extensive public relations work with the Globe and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch related to various NIE projects and promotions. These pioneering efforts led to my being selected as Outstanding Young Educator by the Granite City, IL Jaycees, and I was first runner-up in the State of Illinois. My efforts at using the newspaper in the classroom have received national attention via Associated Press news stories, NBC and CBS television news, NEWSWEEK magazine and EDITOR & PUBLISHER. The NEWSWEEK article made it possible for me to be the featured guest on the TV show "To Tell The Truth."I have been a guest on radio stations in St. Louis, Phoenix and Houston to explain the NIE concept to a vast listening audience.
It was my honor to write a "Here's How" guide on newspaper teaching for the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and have the opportunity to address their national convention. In 1985, I was the subject of another AP article, and appeared on CBS Morning News during national Newspaper In Education Week. I retired from teaching in 1992. I now serve as an NIE consultant promoting PIGSKIN GEOGRAPHY and SLAM-JAM GEOGRAPHY with newspapers, teachers and parents around the United States. Please contact me at the address below if you would like more information about the PIGSKIN GEOGRAPHY Program or about NIE Seminars.
